The heart is basically the size of a fist which is present in the middle of the chest but slightly tilted towards left. The heart is the basic unit of the circulatory system; it pumps the blood and transports it to the rest of the body with the help of blood vessels. The heart and the lungs work in complete synchronisation in order to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen.

The carbon dioxide-rich blood goes into the lungs where it exchanges it with oxygen and brings fresh oxygenated blood back to the heart from where it gets transported to the rest of the body with the help of the aorta and capillaries. This is a continuous process that takes place every second of every day. The arteries are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood and transporting it to the rest of the body. The veins carry deoxygenated or Carbon dioxide-rich blood that is sent to the heart for the exchange of gas. Capillaries are thin blood vessels that connect the small arteries to the small veins in exchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other nutrients in the body. Now due to changes in lifestyle these capillaries and arteries get damaged which means that cholesterol or plaque gets deposited which makes the blood vessels narrow, as a result, it puts a lot of pressure on the heart muscle due to which it has to pump harder. Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating a well-balanced diet is necessary in order to maintain good heart health.

There are various preventive measures and precautions that one can take in order to maintain heart health. Here are some of the lifestyle changes that can help in improving and maintaining the condition of the heart.

As deposition of fat or cholesterol in the arteries makes them narrow and causes a lot of pressure on the heart and causes several life-threatening heart diseases.

Quit smoking as it damages the lungs whose main function is to breathe and exchange gases. Constant smoking damages the alveoli sacs that help in the exchange of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide in between the heart and the lungs. Excessive amounts of tobacco get into the bloodstream that damages the cells, blood vessels, and heart muscles ultimately leading to lung damage and heart disease.

Medications should be taken properly as prescribed by the doctor at a proper time interval while maintaining the gap between the meals.

Quit consumption of drugs and alcohol as it is the root cause of several chronic diseases, lung diseases, heart diseases, liver diseases, kidney diseases etc. And in order to maintain a healthy body, one should not consume alcohol and drugs at all. But if you are a habitual drinker you must reduce your intake and try to quit it.
