Congenital heart disease refers to a heart condition that is caused by birth. Any child who is born with heart disease suffers from congenital heart disease. Some congenital heart diseases are not fatal and do not require any treatment, but most congenital heart disease requires treatment. Heart diseases are difficult enough for adults but they can be disastrous in children. There are numerous heart diseases that are caused in children. There are various causes that might cause congenital defects, but sometimes the cause remains unknown. Early diagnosis of congenital heart disease is very important as it helps the doctor in providing the best treatment options available. With the help of growing technology in the past decade, detecting congenital heart disease while the baby is still in the womb has become possible.

Congenital Heart Diseases Symptoms:

1. Pale blue skin

2. Rapid breathing

3. Swelling hands, ankles, and feet

4. Fatigue

5. Blood circulation

Congenital Heart Diseases Causes:

The heart starts to develop in the first six weeks of pregnancy. The heart then begins to form and start beating. All the important components also begin to develop during this time. This phase is very critical and the mother requires a lot of rest, mental peace, and proper nutrition. Further, there is a list of things that should be avoided during that time, such as drinking, smoking, drug consumption, excessive physical pressure, and heavy medications.  All these things must be avoided as they might cause any defect or health-related issue in the child. Further, there are other factors that lead to congenital heart disease such as genetic disorders, environmental factors, lifestyle, etc

Some commonly caused congenital heart defects:

There are a lot of congenital defects and most of these affect blood vessels, valves, and the development of the heart.  Some of the most commonly caused heart defects includes:

Atrial Septal Defects (ASD): An Atrial Septal Defect is basically a hole in the heart. In this defect, there is a hole in the wall between the upper chambers or the right and left atria of the heart.  The hole causes the blood from the left atrium to mix with the blood in the right atrium. Some of the holes get repaired on their own with proper nutrition and care whereas some require surgery. The surgery can be performed by using a minimally invasive catheter procedure.

Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): A Ventricular septal defect is a hole in the septum that separates the lower chambers of the heart.  If there is a defect or hole in this part then the blood gets pumped back to the lungs instead of the body. A small VSD often heals itself but if the hole is bigger in that case it requires surgery.

Complete Atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC): It is one of the most fatal types of septal defects. It is a dangerous defect as it affects all four chambers of the heart. Since all the chambers are affected it prevents oxygenated blood to reach the body which causes several other health-related issues.  In this type of defect, surgery becomes a necessity.
