A Newborn’s Fight Against PDA and Congenital Rubella Syndrome

Summary

A newborn with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and Congenital Rubella Syndrome faced life-threatening complications. Several hospitals deemed survival unlikely, but BM Birla Heart Hospital, Kolkata, provided hope. Dr. Subhendu Mandal performed a minimally invasive device closure, successfully treating the condition without open-heart surgery. The baby recovered well, breathing stabilized, and he began feeding normally. His mother, once hopeless, called it a miracle.

Background

A newborn baby boy from Naihati faced life-threatening complications at birth. Diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome, his condition was critical. Born with low birth weight and reddish rashes, he struggled with breathing difficulties and chest infections. Several hospitals deemed his survival unlikely, leaving his mother, Debika Biswas Roy, with little hope. Desperate for a solution, she turned to BM Birla Heart Hospital, Kolkata, for advanced care.

Investigation & Analysis

This case was taken up by the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Our in house doctor for Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Kolkata, Dr. Subhendu Mandal conducted a detailed echocardiography, confirming a large 6mm PDA. The condition was exacerbated by Congenital Rubella Syndrome, which prevented the natural closure of the ductus arteriosus. Given the baby’s fragile state and low weight of just 6 kg, immediate intervention was necessary to prevent heart failure and ensure survival.

Treatment and Management

A meticulous and minimally invasive approach was planned to provide the best possible outcome:

Preoperative Preparation:

  • The newborn underwent close monitoring and stabilisation to ensure he was ready for the procedure.

Interventional Procedure:

  • Instead of opting for open-heart surgery, Dr. Mandal performed a device closure intervention using an advanced implant.
  • This cutting-edge technique, one of the first of its kind in Eastern India for a newborn, successfully closed the PDA without invasive surgery.

Post-Operative Care

The intervention was a success, and the baby’s condition improved significantly. With dedicated post-operative monitoring, his breathing stabilised, and he began feeding normally. His mother, Debika, who had almost lost hope, witnessed a miraculous turnaround.

Dr. Mandal shared, “PDA is common, but in this case, the added complication of Congenital Rubella Syndrome made it challenging. A device closure was the best option, ensuring a full recovery without surgery.”

The baby was discharged in stable condition, ready to lead a healthy life. His mother expressed immense gratitude, calling the experience nothing short of a miracle. BM Birla Heart Hospital remains committed to pioneering advanced pediatric cardiac care, offering hope to families in distress.
