Hemoptysis

What is Hemoptysis?

Hemoptysis is a medical condition in which an individual experiences coughing up of blood or blood-stained sputum from his/her respiratory tract. It occurs due to bleeding in the lungs or airways, causing the blood present in the phlegm or mucus that is expelled by a patient while coughing.

Hemoptysis can vary in extent, ranging from small streaks and blood flecks in the sputum to huge amounts of bright red or frothy blood. With the color and the amount of blood, it becomes easier to gain some hints about the underlying hemoptysis causes. In certain cases, an individual might experience other symptoms as well accompanying the bleeding like breath shortness.
