Several types of echocardiogram tests are available. It depends on what your doctor needs to examine.

• Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE): It is the most common type of test. In which a device (a transducer) is placed on your chest over your heart to capture heart images.
• Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): A thin tube with a small transducer is passed down your throat for a clearer view of the heart, often used for detailed diagnosis.
• Stress echocardiogram: It is done before and after exercise or medication to see how well your heart handles stress.
• Doppler echocardiogram: This test shows how fast your blood flows and also in what direction. It helps to detect blockages or valve issues. 

Echocardiogram tests are often recommended if you:

• Experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or swelling in the legs.
• Have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure.
• Need to monitor heart function after a heart attack or surgery.
• Have a heart murmur or valve problems.

• This test is non-surgical and painless, usually taking 30 to 60 minutes.
• A technician applies a cold gel to your chest and moves a handheld device (a transducer) to capture images of the heart.
• If a transesophageal echo (TEE) is needed, mild sedation is given before a small probe is inserted into the throat.
• You can resume normal activities immediately after the test.
