Septoplasty

Deviated nasal septum usually obstructs the natural airflow of the nasal passage leading to the buildup of infections. Prolonging the treatment can cause severe breathing issues that can interfere with the everyday routine. Additionally, the doctor may recommend septoplasty to treat the following -

• Take antibiotics or prescribed medications prior to the surgery as directed by the doctor

The septoplasty procedure involves making a minute incision on one side of the nose. The patient is given local or general anesthesia before the procedure to negate the pain and discomfort throughout the procedure. Once the surgeon has access to the septum, the mucous membrane (covering of the septum) is lifted to reshape the bones and cartilage accordingly. 

Sometimes, the surgeon may also remove barriers like parts of the bone or cartilage or reposition them for improved airflow. Once the procedure is done, the mucous membrane is placed back using surgical sutures and held in position. The surgeon may also place splints or soft packing to hold the nasal tissues in place after the procedure and prevent the risk of tissue scars and nose bleeds. Splints are usually kept for a week depending on the recovery of the patient. 

In cases where the patient chooses to undergo cosmetic procedures simultaneously, the doctor may perform rhinoplasty after the septoplasty. Rhinoplasty is an aesthetic procedure to improve the appearance of the nose.

After the procedure, the patient is taken to the recovery room where the medical staff checks the vitals and monitors recovery. Recovery time after septoplasty varies depending on the extent of the deviation and the medical condition of the patient.

If the surgeon does not suspect any sign of complication, the patient is relieved shortly after the procedure. Additionally, the doctor will prescribe medications and dietary tips for a speedy recovery. Here are some post-operative tips after the septoplasty surgery - 

• Relax as much as you can and keep your head elevated when you sleep.
• Do not blow your nose for several weeks after the procedure
• Avoid strenuous exercises like aerobics, and playing sports for up to five weeks to avoid nosebleeds. 
• Do not smoke or consume excess alcohol
• Do not blow or sneeze through the nose for at least 7-10 days. Sneezes must be channelled through the open mouth.
• Take regular medications for the swelling, bruising and mild discomfort until the doctor’s prescription.
• Take baths instead of showers while there are bandages on your nose
• Since the skin becomes extra sensitive, limit your exposure to the sun
• Go for regular health checkups.
