Tonsillectomy

Before the procedure, the ENT specialist will examine the symptoms and recommend diagnostic tests such as blood tests, tissue culture, etc. which can determine the cause of inflammation in the tonsils. Furthermore, the doctor provides a set of instructions to help patients prepare for tonsillectomy -

• Discuss your history of chronic medical condition(s) and surgical procedures with the doctor
• Stop smoking and consuming alcohol a week before the surgery as they can increase the recovery time
• Do not eat or drink the night before the surgery. It is generally recommended not to take any meals post-midnight.
• Inform your doctor of any ongoing medications and history of an allergic reaction to anesthesia to avoid complications during the procedure.

• Eat food without sharp edges. Encourage soft and healthy foods such as ice creams, yogurt, broth, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, pudding, etc., to soothe your throat and fulfill dietary needs.
• Take your prescribed medicines regularly.
• Use an ice pack several times a day for 2-3 days after the surgery.
• Go for regular follow-up sessions after the tonsillectomy procedure to ensure no postoperative complications.
