Appendectomy

What is appendectomy?

An appendectomy is a common surgery to treat appendicitis, a condition where the appendix becomes inflamed and causes severe abdominal pain.

The appendix is a small, finger-sized pouch located in the lower right side of the abdomen. If it becomes swollen, inflamed or infected—known as appendicitis—it has to be removed through surgery, and that procedure is called appendectomy. If you leave it untreated, an inflamed appendix can rupture (burst), leading to serious complications.

Two types of surgeries are performed to remove the infected appendix, including open appendectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy. Open appendectomy is a common yet standard method, while laparoscopic appendectomy is a less invasive procedure.

  • Open Appendectomy: This involves a small incision, about 2 to 4 inches, on the lower right side of the abdomen. The surgeon removes the appendix through this incision.
  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy: This minimally invasive method uses 1 to 3 small cuts. A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and tools, is inserted through one incision. The surgeon uses a monitor to guide the procedure and removes the appendix through another incision.
