Audiometry

Audiometry tests, also called hearing tests, measure how well you can hear different sounds. If hearing loss is found, the test identifies the type and grades it as mild, moderate, or severe. Based on your results, the audiologist may recommend treatment options such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other methods to improve hearing.

What is an audiometry test?

An audiometry test checks both tones and speech to see how your ears respond to different pitches and volumes. During the test, you usually wear headphones. A series of tones and words are played, and you respond whenever you hear them.

The process is safe, quick, and painless. Audiologists, or hearing specialists, use this test to determine whether you have hearing loss and how severe it is. It’s sometimes called a full hearing evaluation.

Hearing tests are done at different stages of life:

  • Newborns – Many hospitals test babies soon after birth to confirm they can hear properly.
  • Children – Kids may be tested at school or during health check-ups. If a child struggles with hearing, a detailed audiometry test may be recommended.
  • Adults – Many adults take a test when they notice problems, such as struggling to follow conversations or needing to turn up the TV or phone volume.

In simple terms, audiometry is the science of measuring hearing. Different types of hearing tests are available, but none require special preparation or cause pain.
