Dr. Anup Banerji

Dr. Anup Banerji is a Senior Consultant in Interventional Cardiology and a highly respected clinician, academician, and healthcare leader with over four decades of experience in cardiovascular medicine. He is currently a Visiting Cardiologist at B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkata, where he continues to provide comprehensive and advanced cardiac care.

An alumnus of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Dr. Banerji completed his MBBS in 1981, followed by an MD in General Medicine and a DM in Cardiology. He has had an illustrious career with the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), serving as an Independent Cardiologist at Command Hospitals and later as Professor and Head of Cardiology at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, and the Army Institute of Cardiothoracic Sciences, Pune. He went on to hold the highest leadership position in military medicine as the Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services, where he was responsible for clinical excellence, medical education, and healthcare administration across the tri-services.

Clinically, Dr. Banerji has extensive expertise in interventional cardiology and is proficient in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures. His areas of special interest include coronary and peripheral angioplasty, pacemaker implantation, ICD and CRT-D implantation, balloon valvuloplasty, and device closure of congenital heart defects such as ASD, VSD, and PDA. He is also well regarded for his expertise in coronary physiology and advanced cardiac imaging, making him a sought-after specialist for complex cardiac interventions.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Banerji is a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has served as Professor of Cardiology, Examiner and guide for DM and DNB Cardiology programs, and Dean of Academics, contributing significantly to the training of postgraduate and super-specialty students. He has authored numerous articles in indexed peer-reviewed journals and contributed chapters to CSI update books, actively participating in academic discussions, CMEs, and national and international cardiology forums.

Dr. Banerji’s distinguished service has been recognised with several prestigious honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) for exceptional service—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—and the Sena Medal, a gallantry award of the Indian Army. He has also served as the President’s Honorary Surgeon and played a pivotal role in national initiatives such as telemedicine projects, establishment of numerous superspecialty centers, healthcare capacity building, and strategic medical planning across India’s armed forces .
