First Robotic Kidney Transplant Surgery in Jaipur, Rajasthan - Performed at CK Birla Hospitals

"Excellence in healthcare is not just about treatment; it’s about care, precision, and dedication."

The CK Birla Hospitals, Jaipur, proved this when they achieved a historic milestone — performing the first robotic kidney transplant in Rajasthan.

The surgery, carried out on 1st September 2024, marks a big step forward in advanced kidney care and shows how the hospital is committed to giving patients world-class treatment with the highest level of care.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Devendra Sharma, Director of the Urology and Renal Transplant department, along with his skilled team. Using robotic-assisted technology, they were able to carry out the surgery through small incisions, helping the patient recover faster and more comfortably.

How Robot Empowers Doctors in Complex Kidney Surgeries

“The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System has changed the way kidney transplants are done. It provided our doctor better control, improved precision, and made the surgery safer,” says Dr. Sharma.

The Da Vinci surgical system helps surgeons by:

  • Providing a clear 3D view: The magnified, high-definition view helps doctors see even the smallest structures clearly.
  • Enabling precise movements: Robotic arms move like human wrists and can rotate 360°, allowing steady and accurate movements.
  • Allowing smaller cuts: Surgery through small incisions reduces tissue damage, blood loss, and complications.

These benefits make complex kidney surgeries safer, faster, and more accurate than traditional open surgery. Surgeons can work confidently, reduce errors, and give better outcomes to patients.

How Did Robotic Renal Surgery Make Recovery Faster for the Patient?

Robotic surgery gives patients smaller cuts, less pain, and faster recovery, which is especially important for older patients or those with other health issues. In this case, the patient was a an old man who had been on dialysis for several years due to chronic kidney disease.

At his age, he also had other health concerns, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart conditions, which could make traditional open surgery risky and lead to a longer, more difficult recovery. A family member kindly came forward to donate a kidney.

With robotic surgery:

  • The incision was only 4 cm, compared to 15–20 cm in open surgery.
  • Blood loss was minimal, reducing stress on his body—a key advantage for patients with other health issues.
  • Pain and risk of complications were much lower.
  • He was able to sit up the next day and walk within two days, avoiding the prolonged immobility and slower recovery often seen with open surgery.
  • The hospital stay was shorter, allowing him to return to normal life faster and more safely.

Without robotic assistance, traditional open surgery could have caused more blood loss, a higher risk of infection, slower healing, and greater stress on his heart, making recovery longer, harder, and more painful. Robotic kidney transplant surgery in Jaipur provided him a safer, gentler, and faster path to recovery, even considering his age and health conditions.

About the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System

CK Birla Hospitals, Jaipur, uses the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, developed by Intuitive Surgical, a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery. It is popular because it makes complex surgeries safer, more precise, and less invasive.

Surgeons can perform delicate steps with high accuracy, thanks to 3D high-definition vision and wrist-like robotic arms. Patients benefit from smaller cuts, less pain, fewer complications, and faster recovery, which is why hospitals worldwide trust this technology.

"The Da Vinci system allows us to operate with confidence, reduce risks, and help patients recover quickly," says Dr. Devendra Sharma, Director of Urology and Renal Transplant Services.

Successful Kidney Transplant Through Robotic Surgery at Jaipur’s CK Birla Hospital

At an age when fathers require care from their children, a 50-year-old man received a kidney from his family member to treat chronic kidney disease. The transplant took place at CK Birla Hospital, Jaipur, on 1st September 2024, and it was the first robotic kidney transplant in Rajasthan.

The patient had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease years ago and was dependent on dialysis. “His condition was worsening, and a kidney transplant was his last treatment option. A family member came forward and was found fit to donate a kidney,” said Dr. Devendra Sharma, Director of the Urology and Renal Surgery department at CK Birla Hospital.

Dr. Sharma said the transplant was unique because it was performed using a robotic system. “The surgery was successful. The donated kidney was inserted through a 4-cm incision, which is much smaller than the 15–20 cm cut used in traditional open surgery. Robotic-assisted surgery is more precise and accurate,” he explained.

He added that robotic renal surgery not only helps doctors perform delicate steps with higher precision but also reduces post-surgery pain and speeds up recovery.
