72-year-old women, pancreatic cancer survivor, had undergone hernia repair surgery outside CMRI, couple of months back. Hernia surgery involved the placement of a surgical mesh. After some time, lady started having severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. She felt dehydrated all the time, and felt very weak .
Detailed investigations and tests revealed that the mesh had eroded and it had caused Gastrointestinal Fistula, leading to leaking of intestines. Gastrointestinal Fistula is a condition where abnormal connections form between the intestines and other organs. This was a life-threatening condition and it required immediate intervention.
Dr. Ajay Mandal, GI & Hepato-Biliary Surgeon at CMRI performed a complex surgery on this patient who had a history of pancreatic cancer and hernia. The case presented significant challenges. Removing the eroded mesh without causing further damage to the surrounding tissues demanded surgical precision. Additionally, repairing the gastrointestinal fistula required meticulous planning and execution to restore normal intestinal function while ensuring the patient’s overall stability.
Led by Dr. Ajay Mandal, the team at CMRI Kolkata executed a carefully planned surgical procedure. The eroded mesh was successfully removed, and the damaged intestines were repaired with precision.
Post-surgery, the patient showed remarkable improvement. Free from the debilitating pain and complications caused by the gastrointestinal fistula, she is now gradually getting back to her normal life. She was kept under observation for next few days and all required tests were performed to rule out any complications.
