The Department of Nuclear Medicine at BM Birla Heart Research Centre specializes in nuclear medicine, a specialized area of radiology that uses radioactive materials in very small amounts to study the structure and function of organs. These radioactive materials are known as radiotracers and are injected, inhaled, or ingested into the bloodstream. These radioactive substances or radiotracers travel through the system and reach the desired area and emit gamma rays. The gamma rays are then captured by a camera specially designed to read these rays and take pictures of the inside of the body. The Imaging Nuclear Medicine results are far more detailed than any other imaging modality available. The results of these images help identify the disease in its early stages. It also helps to know the exact damage close to the surrounding tissue to get the best possible treatment. The Division of Nuclear Medicine at BM Birla Heart Research Centre uses radiotracers to diagnose, evaluate and treat a variety of chronic diseases. There are several diseases that require a detailed evaluation of organ damage; In such cases, radioactive materials provide information that will help doctors to make the best treatment. Diseases that are treated with the help of radiotracers include heart disease, thyroid problems, cancer, neurological diseases, gastrointestinal and endocrine diseases.
Scan name : 99mTC-MPI (Stress/ Rest)
Purpose: Assessment of the function of the heart muscle. It evaluates many heart conditions, such as CAD, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart wall motion abnormalities. It can also detect regions of myocardial infarction and ischemia. Myocardial viability can be assessed.
Scan name : 99mTC-DTPA Renogram
Purpose: Evaluation of relative kidney function. Assessment of split GFR, the relative function, perfusion and determine any possible obstruction to the kidneys
Scan name: 99mTc-DMSA Renal Scan
Purpose: To assess renal morphology, structure, and function in both congenital and acquired clinical states.
Scan name: 99mTc- Thyroid Scan
Purpose: To assess the function of the thyroid gland. Assessment of Graves disease, SAT, Differentiated thyroid cancer, with or without distant metastasis. Assessment of treatment response (I-131 therapy is also included here)
Scan name: 99mTc-Parathyroid Scan
Purpose: Detection of parathyroid adenoma.
