Posted on 06/29/2022 by RBH

Labyrinthitis  is basically an inner ear disorder that causes loss of hearing. There are two vestibular nerves that are present in the ear that are responsible for sending signals to the brain regarding information about the special navigation and balance control; and whenever any of the nerves gets inflamed it causes a balance disorder called labyrinthitis. There is a system of loopy tubes and sacs present in the inner ear, it also contains fluid and some hair cells that helps in controlling the body balance and hearing. There may be various reasons that cause this condition such as infection and viruses. Such infection can disrupt the information that flows to the brain and affect the hearing ability.

Symptoms: The symptoms for Labyrinthitis vary from person to person; the symptoms may be mild in some cases and quite intense in others. The pain in some conditions is so excruciating that it becomes unbearable while there are cases in which this condition does not cause any pain. Some of the major symptoms might include:

  • Buzzing sound in the ear
  • Loss of hearing

  • Blurry or double vision

Causes: As mentioned earlier, Labyrinthitis is caused due to infection by a virus or bacteria. The condition can get worse when a person is suffering from a cold or flu that triggers the condition. Ear Infections are common but  generally all ear infections do not necessarily lead to labyrinthitis. The main function of the inner ear is to provide hearing and balance to the body; in cases where the inner ear gets infected both these functions get affected too, leading to loss of hearing and loss of body balance. There are various factors that may increase the risk of having labyrinthitis, some of them might include:

  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Fatigue
  • Allergies
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
