Cystic fibrosis is basically a genetic or inherited disorder which means it runs in the family. It causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and various other organs in the body. It damages the lungs to the extent that it produces excessive mucus that is thick and sticky; which blocks the tubes, ducts and air passage. Ultimately, it becomes difficult to breathe as mucus gets trapped and leads to infection. Further, it damages the lungs to an extent where fluid filled sacs known as cysts are formed along with scar tissue which is commonly known as fibrosis; hence, the name cystic fibrosis.

According to various doctors, a defective gene that is inherited from either parent is responsible for cystic fibrosis. Since it makes the mucus thick and causes recurrent lung infections it makes breathing difficult, causes heart issues, and causes recurrent infections that eventually lead to respiratory failure. Constant buildup of mucus makes a favorable environment for bacteria to grow which leads to frequent infection in the lungs.
