Angioplasty, also known as Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), is a medical procedure designed to open narrowed or blocked arteries in the heart. It involves the use of a balloon catheter to expand the narrowed area and restore proper blood flow to the heart muscle.
When is Angioplasty Procedure recommended?
Angioplasty is recommended in various situations, primarily when there is a blockage or narrowing of an artery. Some common indications for angioplasty include:
- Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Angioplasty is commonly performed in individuals with CAD when there is a significant narrowing or blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart.
- Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): In the case of a heart attack, Angioplasty is often performed as an emergency procedure. It aims to restore blood flow to the blocked coronary artery, thereby minimizing damage to the heart muscle.
- Stable Angina: If a person experiences recurring chest pain (stable angina) despite medical therapy, angioplasty may be recommended to improve blood flow to the heart.
- Unstable Angina: In cases of unstable angina, where chest pain is occurring at rest, Angioplasty may be performed as an urgent procedure to prevent a heart attack.
- Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Angioplasty is used to treat narrowing or blockages in the arteries of the legs, arms, or other peripheral areas, helping to improve blood flow.
How is Angioplasty Performed?
Catheter Insertion: A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted through a small incision, usually in the groin or wrist. The catheter is carefully threaded through the blood vessels until it reaches the blocked artery.
Balloon Inflation: Once the catheter is in position, a deflated balloon at the tip is inflated within the narrowed artery. The inflation of the balloon compresses the plaque against the artery walls, widening the artery.
Stent Placement (if needed): In some cases, a stent, a small mesh tube, may be inserted to keep the artery open. The stent ensures the artery remains unblocked, allowing for sustained blood flow.
