Paediatric Immunisation

Paediatric immunization is extremely crucial for protecting your children against the risks of serious diseases and ailments. These help to negate the risks of conditions like polio, tetanus and Diptheria. If the child has any mild or severe illness on the scheduled day, the vaccine should be delayed, until the child feels better. However, the scheduled vaccine should not be postponed in case of a minor illness.

Note to Parents

  1. Vaccination can be done in presence of a minor illness.
  2. If doses are missed or the child is not immunized yet, catch-up vaccination should be done as soon as possible.
  3. The use of a combination vaccine is generally preferred over separate injections.
  4. Whenever multiple vaccinations are to be given simultaneously, they should be given within 24 hours, if simultaneous administration is not feasible due to some reasons.
  5. Any number of antigens can be given on the same day.
  6. When necessary, 2 vaccines can be given in the same limb at a single visit.
  7. Prior to vaccination, inform your doctor if the child has had any significant reaction to the previous doses.
  8. Please inform your doctor immediately if there is any adverse event following immunisation.
  9. Fever and pain/redness over injection site are common side effects after any vaccination and can be treated with Paracetamol as prescribed by your doctor and may be repeated after 4-6 hours.
  10. Additional doses of OPV on all supplemental immunisation days should be given.
  11. It is advisable to stay in the doctor’s clinic for 15 to 20 minutes after vaccination to watch out for any allergic reaction.
